Indian Defence Organisation DRDO Servers Hacked, China among the Suspects

The official website of one of India’s most high profile defense organization, Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) (www.drdo.gov.in) was hacked and breached by hackers at the beginning of March 2013.

Indian Defence Minister A.K. Antony on Wednesday told media that  “The site’s server was breached, leak was detected in the first week of March as officials from India’s technical intelligence wing,National Technical Research Organisation (NTRO), working with private Indian cyber security experts cracked open a file called ‘army cyber policy’. The file had been attached to hacked email accounts of senior DRDO officials that quickly spread through the system in a matter of seconds.”

Pawan Duggal who is an Indian cyber expert said that ” this kind of hacking has taken place for the very first time in the history of the country.

“The current attack that’s happened on the servers, here in the DRDO is possibly the biggest kind of cyber security breach that’s happened in the history of cyber security jurisprudence in our country,” said Duggal

NewsTrackIndia reports that as Indian security experts began to track its origin they discovered, for the first time, that all the sensitive files stolen from the infected systems were being uploaded on a server in the Guangdong province of China.

The authorities fear that as a result of hack, the hackers have got hold of large amount of highly sensitive documents, posing threat to country’s strategic plannings.

Dispite of Duggal’s claim, this is not the first time when DRDO site is hacked, the website was indeed hacked by Algerian hackers back in 2012.

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is an agency of the Republic of India, responsible for the development of technology for use by the military, headquartered in New Delhi, India.
