NordPass Releases List of 200 Most Used Passwords

According to a report from NordPass, people haven’t yet stopped relying on done-to-death passwords such as ”123456,” ”12345,” ”password,” and ”qwerty,” while research reveals that these three are the weakest passwords nowadays and can easily make you vulnerable to hacking. The password 123456 appeared over 103 million times in NordPass’s research.

The study involved around fifty countries, and researchers conducted gender comparisons to reach a fair conclusion. As many as 222,287 females used ”iloveyou” as their password in the US, while 96,785 men used the same. 

Worst Passwords List Reveals Shocking Details

Surprisingly, according to the report, the passwords that topped the list of most used passwords in 2017 and 2019 still ranked in the top five out of the 200 worst passwords for 2021. Ferrari and Porsche were the commonly used auto brands in passwords, and Liverpool was the most widely used team name. Conversely, a large majority of users preferred to use their names as passwords.

“Unfortunately, passwords keep getting weaker, and people still don’t maintain proper password hygiene,” NordPass CEO Jonas Karklys stated. 

Most Easily Cracked Password

The top fifty commonly used passwords could all be hacked within less than one second. Only those featuring from number 53 (myspace1) onwards might take a bit longer for an attacker to crack. 

A hacker may not need more than three hours to crack even complex passwords such as michelle, 1g2w3e4r, and gwerty123. All the 200 passwords featured on the list released by NordPass can be cracked within one to three hours.
