SOPA India: Indian ISPs force to block 104 music service websites

The recent Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) legislation may have been rejected in US but India it has become a success.

In a court order issued by Kolkata court to 387 Internet providers, they will have to block 104 websites because of a suit that was filed by Indian Music Industry (IMI) against 104. The suit was filed against the websites for hosting material illegally. According to the judges, blocking these websites is the best way to handle the situation and carry on with the case.

Every single website hosting industry’s music illegally was ordered to be blocked by the court. IMI provided list of 400 top most offending websites that were supposed to be blocked but court decided to block 104 for now.

According to arstechnica.com, the court has provided court with three options regarding how the sites should be blocked, One is blocking by IP address (“57.432.5.22”), second is blocking by DNS name (“hackread.com”), or the third option is URL blocking by deep packet inspection (“hackread.com/bollywood“).

Blocking websites on the internet is not a piece of cake, as the first website that was ordered to be banned long ago was songs.pk but after several tries the ISPs couldn’t block the site because songs.pk was able to found other direct access link for the users in India.

Indian SOPA is also raining over Google and Facebook, where court is pressurizing both companies to delete offensive material and images against the Hindu Gods.

Court decision was strongly hailed by the international music trade group (IFPI), but at the same time they think that there is much more that has to be done in this stance. According to chief executive of IFPI Mr. Frances Moore “The court ruled that blocking is a proportionate and effective way to tackle website piracy. The Indian government should build on this progress by moving forward legislation to effectively tackle all forms of digital piracy to enable the country’s digital music market to reach its full potential.”
