In a video interview, Snowden protected the overall notion of spying but he pointed out that surveillance should be done for some specific purpose only. It is not a good idea to conduct surveillance on all of us, said Snowden while speaking with SXSW with the American Civil Liberties Union.

Referring to the Charlie Hebdo attacks and the Sydney Siege, ex-NSA spy Snowden noted that the governments already knew about the attackers involved in these incidents.

He stated: “They’re not going to stop the next attacks either. Because they’re not public safety programs, they’re spying programs.”

He added, “but the question that we as a society have to ask, are our collective rights worth a small advantage in our ability to spy.”
